Questions Frequently Asked About

Psychology 271

Is PSY 271 a regular statistics course?

PSY 271, Data Analysis in Psychology, is a 1-unit course that meets two hours a week in the computer lab. Students practice (or review) what they have learned in their regular statistics class while working on real data sets.

Can I take PSY 271 Cr/NC?

Yes. You can take PSY 271 Cr/NC or for a letter grade. However, if you are also taking PSY 270, you must take PSY 270 for a letter grade even if you take 271 Cr/NC. CAUTION: In order to receive credit, you must perform at a level of a C or better. In other words, if you did C-minus work, you would receive No Credit.

Is PSY 271 required for all psychology majors?

PSY 271 is required for all psychology majors.

If I enrolled at SDSU before 1997, am I required to take PSY 271?

If I will be transferring to SDSU beginning in Fall 1998 or later and I have already taken PSY 270, am I still required to take PSY 271?

Yes. PSY 271 is required as preparation for the major, and will be an excellent review of PSY 270.

Can I take PSY 271 before I take PSY 270?

No. You must demonstrate concurrent (or prior) enrollment in PSY 270 or equivalent.

If I took a statistics class other than PSY 270, must I now take 270 in order to enroll in PSY 271?

No. Most statistics classes (in mathematics, biology, sociology, behavioral sciences, etc.) are automatically accepted as equivalent to PSY 270.

If I previously had a four-unit class in statistics, am I still required to take PSY 271?

That depends on whether your four-unit class had a computer activities, data-analysis component. If so, you may submit a Petition for Adjustment of Academic Requirement asking that your 4-unit class be accepted for PSY 270 and PSY 271. You may obtain this form in the Psychology Undergraduate Advising Office. Be sure to include all necessary documentation including

  1. A photocopy of the Catalog Description of the class you took and
  2. A detailed syllabus for the class you took.

If my statistics class was a three-unit course but had a computer data-analysis component, am I still required to take PSY 271?

It is most unlikely that PSY 271 would be waived in this scenario, but you may submit a Petition for Adjustment of Academic Requirement if you wish. You may obtain the form in the Psychology Undergraduate Advising Office. Be sure to include all necessary documentation including

  1. A photocopy of the Catalog Description of the class you took and
  2. A detailed syllabus for the class you took.

If I have taken PSY 301 will I still be required to take PSY 271?

If you have had your statistics class very recently, and if you did very well in that class (A- or better), and if you completed PSY 301 before Fall 98, you may submit a Petition for Adjustment of Academic Requirement requesting that PSY 271 be waived. You may obtain this form in the Psychology Undergraduate Advising Office. Be sure to include transcripts verifying your grades in statistics and 301.

Will PSY 271 be an enforced prerequisite for any of my future psychology classes?

Yes. PSY 271 will become an enforced prerequisite for PSY 301, 410 and 412-419.

If I am under an earlier catalog and have completed my statistics, is there any situation in which I SHOULD take PSY 271 even though it is not required?

Yes. PSY 271 will provide an excellent review of statistics. You should definitely take this class (and/or PSY 301) before entering PSY 370 or PSY 410. Likewise, if you are planning to go on to graduate training in psychology and you have finished these classes without being exposed to computer data analysis, you should definitely take PSY 271.
