Questions Frequently Asked About

Psychology 301

Is PSY 301 a lab class?

Yes. Beginning Fall 2000, PSY 301 became a four unit class that meets three hours a week for lecture and two hours a week in the computer lab.

Is PSY 301 required for all psychology majors?

PSY 301 OR PSY 410 is required for any psychology major who first enrolled at SDSU in Fall 1996 or later, or who changed to the psychology major in Fall 1996 or later.

Is PSY 301 intended for people who plan to go into research?

PSY 301 is for intended EVERYONE. It is designed to help you become an intelligent consumer of research findings and to give you an introduction to how research is actually done.

What is the difference between PSY 301 and PSY 410?

PSY 410 is a more challenging class, and it offers a much richer experience in doing research, data analysis and writing.

PSY 301 is a 4-unit class that meets five hours a week, three hours a week for lecture and two hours a week in the computer lab.

PSY 410 is a 5-unit class, that meets eight hours a week, two hours a week for lecture and six hours a week in lab.

If I plan to go on to graduate school should I take PSY 301 or 410?

That depends on the type of graduate program you are considering. If you are thinking about a graduate program in Counseling or Social Work, you may take PSY 301. If you are thinking about a graduate program in a Psychology Department, you must take PSY 410. You really should come into the advising office to learn about these different programs.

If I am going to take PSY 410, should I still take PSY 301?

No one can answer that for you, but taking PSY 301 before taking PSY 370 and PSY 410 can be an excellent strategy. If you are at all uncertain about your preparation, PSY 301 will help you prepare for these more difficult classes. On the other hand, if you are trying to graduate in four years and if you have a very strong academic record, you may wish to bypass PSY 301.

If I previously took an upper-division Psychological Methods class will it be accepted for PSY 301?

That will depend on whether the class had a computer-activities, data-analysis component and on how similar the syllabus is to PSY 301. If you think your methods class was equivalent you may submit a petition for Academic Adjustment requesting that the class be accepted for PSY 301. You may obtain the form from the Psychology Undergraduate Advising Office (LS 3). Be very sure to include all documentation, particularly a syllabus, with your petition.

If I previously took a Psychological Methods class at community college will it be accepted for PSY 301?

Any class taken at community college is a lower-division class and can not be transferred as upper-division. However, you could request that you be permitted to take fewer upper-division units in psychology. This would require a petition for Adjustment of Academic Requirements, which you can obtain at the Psychology Advising Office.

NOTE: PSY 301 was first introduced as a 3-unit course. It first became a 4-unit course in Fall 2000. Students who took PSY 301 as a three-unit course before Fall 2000 may not receive four units.
