Miscellaneous Application Information

1. It is to your advantage to read the instructions carefully and begin the application process as early as possible.

2. GREs: The form on which you register to take the GRE allows space for you to indicate the institution code and the code for Clinical Psychology. When you are applying to this Joint Doctoral Program you must specify the institution code for San Diego State University (R4682) and the code for Clinical Psychology (2001). If you follow this procedure your scores should be sent to the appropriate departments. It is not necessary for you to order scores for the University of California at San Diego unless you are accepted into the program.

ETS informs us that the general GRE is computerized only. You may view your scores at the end of the exam; it takes ten to fourteen days for the scores to be printed. Keep this information in mind when you are submitting application material so that your file will be completed by the December 1 deadline.

3. It is important that you take the GRE General in time for your scores to meet the December 1 deadline. Without the required material your file will be incomplete and the committee typically does not review incomplete files.

4. You will be notified, via email, the status of your JDP application (complete/incomplete). If you do not receive notification, call or email. This office is located at San Diego State University. At this point, the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) will have no information regarding your application.

You can check on the status of your application here.

5. Should you also decide to also apply to a Psychology master's program at SDSU, the Master's application is on their web site.  Please submit all required information to the Master's Program.

Although you may apply to both the master's and the doctoral programs simultaneously please be sure to apply to SDSU Graduate Admissions-Enrollment Services ONLY ONE TIME. If you are not accepted into the doctoral program but are admitted to the master's program, your Admissions and Records file will be processed accordingly.

6. Please do not send your application material by certified or registered mail. Often this results in a delay as special trips to the post office are not made on a daily basis. First class mail will suffice. If the deadline is very close you may want to use an overnight delivery service to ensure timely arrival.

7. To expedite completion of your Joint Doctoral Program application file, you may forward as many items as possible in one envelope. Letters of recommendation may be signed by the recommender across the envelope seal and will be considered official provided the seal is unbroken.

You must submit official transcripts of all colleges and universities attended even if you were enrolled for only one quarter/semester. Failure to comply may result in denial of admission by SDSU.  Mail transcripts to: Graduate Admissions, Enrollment Services, San Diego State University, 5500 Campanile Drive, San Diego, CA 92182-7416.

This program is administered through San Diego State University. We require that specific information be sent directly to the program office.

The SDSU Graduate Admissions-Enrollment Services requires other specific information be sent directly to that office. All application material designated for each office should arrive by December 1. PLEASE MAIL THE MATERIAL FOR EACH OF THESE OFFICES SEPARATELY.

If you misdirect your application material to UCSD, it cannot be retrieved and, therefore, will not be considered. In addition, the Joint Doctoral Program does not charge an application fee. The SDSU Graduate Admissions-Enrollment Services charges a fee of $55, and will cash your check or charge your credit card when received, irrespective of the status of your application with the doctoral program office.

To reiterate, do not send any application material to the University of California at San Diego at this time. Only after a student is accepted into the Joint Doctoral Program, will it be necessary to apply to UCSD.

To avoid disappointment, please be sure that you mail your application early enough to be received in this office no later than December 1. Our best advice is to read the instructions thoroughly, follow them exactly, and if you have procedural questions, call our office well before the deadlines and before you mail any material. Please do not call the program office to ask for special favors.

ATTENTION FOREIGN APPLICANTS: It is important that you check with your university to be sure your final transcript will be available, and that it will show your degree award. This is essential for completing your application. You will not be admitted to the university without it. You may be required to use an independent evaluator. Any costs involved will be the responsibility of the applicant.
