Current Research:
I'm currently studying commercial effectiveness during different types of television programs. I am also working on a study about Myspace, examining the social costs of the frequent use of the website.

What made you choose to (or want to) work in this particular lab?
I read about Dr. Marx's research and liked what he was doing. Plus I knew that he was new to SDSU, as I was new to the graduate program, so we could both adjust to our new situations together.

What do you like about working in the lab?

Well I have my own shared lab office with my lb partner Leah with a really nice new computer. Also the office is right next to Dr. Marx;s office so if I have any questions or ideas, I don;t have to go far.

What in particular about your experience in this lab do you think would be especially attractive to other students seeking a lab placement?

I don't have a lot of experience yet, but the most attractive thing for other students seeking lab placement in the future would probably be Dr. Marx himself. He's very nice and helps me in any way he can. Plus you get to be part of his awesome studies!

What are your future plans?

My future plans are either to apply for a doctoral program and continue on with social psychology or to find a job either in the field of social psychology or someplace where I can apply my knowledge of psychology and utilize it.

If you have any questions you can contact me by e-mail at RyanRocker@aol.com

Current Research:

The project I’m currently working on is called “Reducing stereotype threat using self-handicapping as an impression management strategy.”

What made you choose to (or want to) work in this particular lab?
I first wanted to work in David’s lab because he does research on stereotype threat that I was interested in. My interests matched well with his. I sat down with David before starting the program to discuss with him how he ran the lab, and it seemed like his mentoring style was a good match with my personality.

What do you like about working in the lab?

This lab is a very fun place to be. We have regular lab meetings with not only David, but Melody Sadler and David Armor, which gives us the opportunity to learn from three very successful professors. Everyone’s opinions, from the undergrads to the grad students to the professors, are weighted equally. Discussions are welcome, and everyone is encouraged to participate.

What in particular about your experience in this lab do you think would be especially attractive to other students seeking a lab placement?

David really encourages his grad students to become as involved in research and teaching as possible. He wants you to get as much out of the grad school experience as you want, and this is really important for someone who wants to continue on to a PhD program.

What are your future plans?

I would like to continue on to a PhD program, doing research in stereotyping and self-handicapping.

Current Research:
Stereotype Threat in contrast with gender stereotypes (Marx). Stereotype Suppression and within-group stereotypes (KO).

What made you choose to (or want to) work in this particular lab?
I had to give up my career to come back to school and I was looking for something that gave me that same sense of purpose of working for a living, but I didn’t quite know what I was looking for. I was fortunate enough to meet Dr. Marx at a Psi Chi meeting and started doing research for him and I was hooked. If you’re a budding Psychology student and you haven’t joined Psi Chi (The National Student Honor Society), or its sister organization Psych Club yet you should really consider it. It’s a wealth of information and opportunity for your future.

What do you like about working in the lab?

Working in a research setting has given my education a real sense of purpose. It’s really cool seeing an idea become an entire research experiment, and beginning to learn how to look for trends and the ethics involved in research.

What in particular about your experience in this lab do you think would be especially attractive to other students seeking a lab placement?

The relationships that you establish with professors and your fellow research assistants. I consider the professor I work for my mentor. It’s nice to have such a mentor as an undergrad.

What are your future plans?

I am currently looking at Psy. D. Programs in the greater San Diego area. I want to attain a Psy. D. In Clinical Psychology and do Post Doctoral work to Board Certified. I want to perform Psychotherapy and go into private practice someday. My interest is working with teens, adolescents, and early adults. I also would like to teach someday, not as a career, but perhaps a lecture class at a university or a community college course. That’s so far down the road that I just need to take things one day at a time.

Current Research:
I am currently working on "COMBATING STEREOTYPE THREAT THROUGH POSITIVE STEREOTYPE VIOLATIONS", which is research that deals with the idea that having more positive female role models could reduce the stereotype threat in male dominated areas such as mathematics and the sciences.

What made you choose to (or want to) work in this particular lab?
I took Psy 340, Social Psychology, with Dr. Marx and was intrigued by the phenomenon stereotype threat. I began to ask questions about his work and he offered me the opportunity to work with him, and other students, in his lab.

What do you like about working in the lab?

I like getting a first hand experience of doing the “behind the scene work” so that I gain a better appreciation for experimenters.

What in particular about your experience in this lab do you think would be especially attractive to other students seeking a lab placement?

This lab allows for principles learned in the classroom to be put in action, as well as the opportunity for skills to be acquired that students are not exposed to in a regular class setting.

What are your future plans?

I plan to go to graduate school to obtain a PhD in Counseling Psychology.

Current Research:

Does familiarity breed optimism? The effects of task familiarity on performance predictions.

What made you choose to (or want to) work in this particular lab?
I met David Armor in his Psych 410 (Experimental Psych) course and thought that hands on experience learning psychology as a science. In terms of David Marx’s lab, I was looking to get some experience with laboratory mechanics and heard that David Marx ran a very good group.

What do you like about working in the lab?

Both Dr. Armor and Dr. Marx are fantastic mentors. They spend countless hours giving their students guidance.

What in particular about your experience in this lab do you think would be especially attractive to other students seeking a lab placement?

Again, the mentoring is top notch. However, they will require a fair amount of work in turn.

What are your future plans?

Would love to get a Ph.D. in social psychology.

Current Research:
The current research we are working on is Perceptions and Performance

What made you choose to (or want to) work in this particular lab?
The undergrad advisor at SDSU suggested I meet with Dr. Marx, because I was really interested in Social Psychology.

What do you like about working in the lab?

This lab is hands on, and the research assistants are able to get involved learning about the different aspects of research. Dr. Marx combines his lab meetings with other professors. I think this is useful because we get more than one perspective.

What in particular about your experience in this lab do you think would be especially attractive to other students seeking a lab placement?

This lab allows students to get more involved in research. The combination of professors allows more insight.

What are your future plans?

Pursue a Ph.D. in Social Psychology
