Study Design

Project TWIST is designed as a prospective, longitudinal study of a cohort of adolescents aged 12 and older receiving outpatient mental health services through schools and clinics.  The teen’s parent and therapist are also interviewed, and outcomes are assessed across multiple time points for one year.  Both quantitative and qualitative measures are utilized.

Overview

TWIST stands for “TeamWork in Services for Teens.”  The TWIST project is a research study designed to examine factors evident at the start of psychotherapy that may be associated with better outcomes for a culturally-diverse sample of youth.  TWIST aims to describe how social, psychological, and contextual factors are associated with client-therapist agreement upon key therapy issues and how such agreement may relate to outcomes. The study will assess theoretically-based factors hypothesized to be associated with higher levels of adolescent-parent-therapist agreement on key issues at intake and the role that it plays in explaining treatment participation and outcomes for adolescents in outpatient mental health services. The ultimate goal of the proposed project is to increase the effectiveness of care by identifying specific culture-linked cognitive processes that can be targeted in future intervention development.  The study is funded by the National Institute of Mental Health.
