MacArthur Communicative Development Inventories
Research Interests
Dr. Fenson's current research centers on two fundamental aspects of early conceptual growth--the manner in which young children organize their knowledge of the world for efficient processing of information (concept development) and the growth of strategies that toddlers and preschoolers are able to employ to achieve goals (problem solving). Most published research on early intellectual growth focuses on what children know rather than on how they solve new problems. Our research addresses the ways in which young children use their knowledge in pursuing goals.
Dr. Fenson has also taken a lead role in developing and evaluating a set of instruments for assessment of early language skills. These include a pair of parent report inventories (the MacArthur Communicative Development Inventories), short form versions of these instruments, and a picture-based instrument for the laboratory assessment of language comprehension skills. The lab offers students the opportunity to participate in the planning, execution, and interpretation of experiments and to acquire methodological and computer-related skills that are essential in developmental science.
