Merle B. Turner

Claire Murphy, Jerome Sattler, Al Hillix, Terry Cronan

Robert and Lorraine Penn

Emeritus Professor Merle B. Turner was a faculty member in the Department of Psychology at SDSU for 27 years, from 1947 to 1974. He passed away in 2005, and as a tribute his widow Marjorie has made a generous donation to fund the Merle B. Turner Memorial Scholarship. Emeritus Professor Al Hillix says of Merle, “He was a consummate gentleman, but there was nothing stiff about him. He approached life from behind a wry philosophical smile. I never saw him angry or out of sorts. He was a great listener and seemed always to be open to the ideas of others. He and his wife, Marjorie, loved to sail and often lived on their boat for months at a time, sometimes on long and dangerous voyages to places as far away as Australia . Merle was probably the best philosopher among 20th-century psychologists. His 1965 manuscript for his book, Philosophy and the Science of Behavior , won the Century Psychology Series Award for the best manuscript submitted during the year, and the resulting book, published in 1967, probably influenced more teachers of the history or philosophy of psychology than any other 20 th -century book. Those who knew him will never forget him or the truly significant contributions that he made to psychology.”

Emeritus Professor Robert Penn and his wife Lorraine also made a sizable gift in January, 2007, to help fund the Merle B. Turner Memorial Scholarship. Students will benefit from their thoughtful gift for years to come.

In honor of husband and wife, Emeritus Professor Al Hillix and Professor Terry Cronan , Emeritus Professor Jerome Sattler has made a generous donation to fund the renovation of a seminar room that will bear their names. This tribute will serve as a lasting reminder of Al and Terry's outstanding contributions to the field of psychology, and the Department of Psychology at SDSU.

Dr. Sattler received the 2005 Gold Medal Award for life achievement in the application of psychology from American Psychological Association's Foundation. The Gold Medal recognizes "a distinguished career and enduring contribution to advancing the application of psychology through methods, research and/or application of psychological techniques to important practical problems."

A special thank you goes out to all who have given of themselves and their resources over the past year to aid the Psychology Department in achieving its goals for education, research, and service to the community.
