SDSU Professor of Psychology James F. Sallis was awarded the 2007 Distinguished Scientist Award by the Society of Behavioral Medicine (SBM) at the March 2007 conference in Washington, DC. The award was presented by Dr. Ed Fisher, president of the Society of Behavioral Medicine. The Distinguished Scientist Award is the organization's highest honor, given to one person per year who has made contributions to scientific advancement in the field of health and behavior. Dr. Sallis was also commended on his efforts to use research to change policy and practice. Dr. Sallis will deliver a special lecture at the March 2008 SBM conference that will be held in San Diego.
Dr. Sallis is an active researcher in several health-related areas including active living and childhood obesity prevention (funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation), and neighborhood quality of life (funded by the National Institutes of Health).
The Society of Behavioral Medicine (SBM), founded in 1978, is a multidisciplinary non-profit organization that provides a forum for over 7000 professionals from nursing, psychology, medicine, and public health to study the interactions of behavioral, physiological and biochemical states. SBM provides an interactive network for education and collaboration on many health issues including prevention, diagnosis and treatment, rehabilitation, and health promotion.
